April Roundtable: Service Takes Center Stage!

This April, our roundtable tackled a new topic, but one of the most important parts of Scouting: service! We brought fresh ideas to the table and talked about real, exciting ways to get youth involved beyond meetings and requirements.

Service is how Scouting puts values into action—helping others, strengthening our community, and building character. And here’s the best part: service doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. Sometimes the best opportunities are the ones right in front of us—planned well, done with care, and delivered with Scout spirit.

The Service Ideas We Brainstormed:

Humane societies & animal-related projects

Blankets and toys, shelter supply prep, and pet-ready organization (labeled storage, restocking). A lot of these can even work as off-site projects!

Forest preserve help & conservation hour projects

Trails, cleanups, and supporting local green spaces—awesome outdoor time while helping Scouts build real skills.

Rainbow Scout Reservation service

Camp isn’t just a place you visit—it’s a community you help build. Service at camp makes the whole Scouting experience stronger- and there is ALWAYS something to do!

Partnering with your chartered organization

Want a shortcut to great service opportunities? Ask your chartered org! And we emphasized: ask multiple contacts (facility staff, teachers/program leaders, and the lead community contact).

Helping food pantries

Sorting, packing, food drives, supporting distribution days—small actions that add up fast (and build trust in your community).

Community events (cleanups & local days)

We talked about how fun it is to jump into local efforts—like your village’s cleanup day—helping neighbors and keeping shared spaces looking their best.

Nursing homes & assisted living facilities (year-round)

This is service that matters all year long. Depending on the facility, projects might include activities, crafts/comfort items, or writing notes/letters.

Bottom Line

No matter what project your unit chooses, the heart of Scouting service is the same: show up, help out, do it with respect, and make your community stronger—one action at a time.

Just prior to February 8, 2025, it's 115th birthday, a bi-partisan bill was entered into Congress to designate February 8th as Scouting America Day! The Boy Scouts of America was chartered by Congress in 1916 and changed it's name to Scouting America on February 8, 2025 in support of it's programs which serve all youth, boys and girls. Youth who engage in Scouting America programs including Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Exploring are learning character development, citizenship, leadership and personal fitness.

The Guide to Advancement was updated effective January 1, 2025 with many new updates. Unit leaders and interested adults are encouraged to download a new copy https://www.scouting.org/program-updates/updates-to-the-guide-to-advancement/

Several important updates:

1. Scoutmasters are the only leaders who can open a blue card unless a leader is otherwise designated to do so by the Scoutmaster.

2. Several new policies regarding online merit badges and the use of AI technology.

3. Eagle reference letters will be handled differently and there is an updated Eagle Scout Application.

Scouting guidelines for uniforms have been updated for 2025 for Scouts BSA! While the Scouts BSA uniform is still encouraged, it is now the responsibility of each Troop to decide their own uniform policy. Any questions about a uniform worn by a Scout should be directed to the unit leader and not the Scout to avoid any misunderstandings. https://www.scouting.org/program-updates/scouting-activity-clothing-guideline/

Today is the Rainbow Council Annual Meeting and everyone is invited to attend! Ted Karns, CEO/Scout Executive and other Rainbow Council Board members will be delivering their annual report on Scouting in our Council. Board members will be elected and we will celebrate 115 years of Scouting history as Boy Scouts of America as we officially transitioned to Scouting America on February 8, 2025. Join us as we celebrate with cake and a ribbon cutting ceremony with all the frills!

It's Pinewood Derby time and many Packs have been preparing for this annual event! Navarro Farm serves members of our community and they recently held their own Pinewood Derby. Rainbow Council donated the tracks, timers and equipment to make this happen. Everyone had a great time designing their pinewood derby cars and enjoyed some friendly competition racing them too. Rainbow Council, and our Scouts, are always happy to do a good turn and serve members in our community!

As we reflect on the past year, we want to express our deepest gratitude for your generous support of Rainbow Council. Your donations of time, talent, and treasure have made a profound impact, and we especially thank the 1,045 volunteers who work tirelessly to advance our mission.

Here's a look at what your support helped accomplish in 2024:

57+ Eagle Scout Service Projects addressing local community needs and improving lives.
Scouting for Food delivered over 80,000 pounds of food to local food pantries.
Countless unit and family service hours spent preserving the environment and helping various nonprofits.
Programs that impacted nearly 2,000 youth, promoting healthy living, citizenship, service, leadership, and mentoring.

Together, we are developing the leaders of tomorrow, today. But our work isn’t finished. As we prepare to meet the challenges of 2025, we ask for your continued support.

Welcome back to Rainbow Council News! Back with some Scouting for Food results! Scouting for Food is a national movement where youth partner with the communities we serve to fight food insecurities. Rainbow Council Scouting units in the Village of New Lenox, Illinois and the Village of Frankfort banded together with other Scouts in their communities and distributed bags to be filled with food that were then collected, sorted, loaded and delivered.

Over the last 13 years, the New Lenox and Frankfort Scouting for Food drives have collected nearly 1 MILLION pounds of food. Totals for 2024 are still being calculated but are estimated to top 80,000 pounds of nonperishable food collected, packaged, and delivered to several local food pantries. Scouting for Food runs through November; so, more units are expected to participate in the coming weeks.

This past weekend was our Pumpkin Smash. We shot, crushed, and smashed over 200 pumpkins as well as some other fun games.

Welcome back to Rainbow Council News! Alexis, pictured above, is one of Rainbow Council's youth who is striving to make an impact through leadership and service to others. Alexis is raising funds for an Eagle Project to build the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument to honor families who lost a family member in service to their country. Groundbreaking occurred on Alexis's 17th birthday this week. Alexis hopes to honor other Gold Star Families in recognition of the support she and her family received after losing her father, Col. Mark McCullough, who passed away during active duty.

Thank you to volunteer and ASM Kris Zupancic from Troop 256 and his family for the new steel, fleur-de-lis. The red coating is chalkboard paint, so Scouts can customize their message and take a photo. A huge thank you to Heidelberg Materials for donating all the steel.

With multiple local and national marketing campaigns running in support of unit fall recruitment, it is critical that units update their pin at beascout.org to be sure families can contact you directly to request more information or apply to be members. When a family finds your unit on beascout.org and completes an application to join, they are not automatically accepted as members unless the unit Key 3 respond to the system's email request to approve that application. We want all our new families to have a smooth transition so your support is appreciated. Welcome back to Rainbow Council News! Scouting America just partnered with former Chicago Bears professional football player and Eagle scout David Montgomery. David continues to serve his community and is encourages all youth to get involved in scouting. Read more about David Montgomery's partnership with Scouting America.

Also, there is an exciting promotion for scouts who join Cub Scouts before Oct 31st and their recruiter! ALL new Cub Scouts who register by Oct 31, 2024 receive a Welcome Kit and the Scout who recruited them receives a spiffy Recruiter patch to wear! Welcome Kit includes vinyl sticker, Scout Life mini magazine, car magnet, and information card.

Welcome back to Rainbow Council News! There are some exciting programs coming up for all our members but registration closes on Friday.

Oct. 5 Color Walk is a community event open to all ages. Cost includes an event t shirt and patch so come out and get a little messy!
Oct.11-13 Super Scout Camporee at RSR for all our Scouts BSA units. Enjoy some friendly patrol competitions.
Showing your Green at RSR for all our Venturing units. Coast Guard, drones and more!

We love camping and so do our scouts! To camp in Cub Scouts, you need at least one BALOO trained leader so sign up by Oct 7th. We need a minimum of 6 to host the class.

Rainbow Council Board members are working very hard too and just hosted a successful Shooting Clays fundraiser to support our youth. You can read more about it here . The next Board supported event is the Distinguished Citizens Award Dinner on Nov. 6, 2024. You can read more about this amazing opportunity here.

The 2024 Sporting Clays Event was a great success for Rainbow Council! The Downer's Grove Sportsmen's Club in Morris was filled with participants and volunteers on Saturday, September 21st. After a fun day on the course, lunch was prepared by Dave Konopko and family and no one left hungry.

2. Policy changes regarding barriers to abuse became effective Sept. 1, 2024. New policies affect accommodations, the buddy system, parent and legal guardian participation and 18-20 year old adult participation. First Aid Building Restoration

Volunteers requested

We are reaching out to request your help with an important project at Rainbow Scout Reservation in Morris, IL. We are currently refurbishing the First Aid building and need additional hands to assist with installing drywall. This is a key step in enhancing the facility to better serve our Scouts and community.

Details of the Task:

Date: Sunday September 22, Sunday September 29, Sunday October 6

Time: 9am start, 1pm start

Location: Rainbow Scout Reservation, Morris, IL – First Aid building to the right of the flushies

Duration: Four-hour shift

If you are available, we kindly ask you to volunteer for a shift. Your experience and skills would be invaluable to ensure that this project is completed efficiently and effectively.

What to Bring: Please bring any drywall-related supplies you may have, such as:

Taping knives

Screw guns

Drywall screws

Drywall fiberglass joint tape

Drywall mesh

Empty clean pickle buckets

Drywall saws

Drywall mud pans

Drywall lifts

Drywall squares

Drywall rasp

Mixer

Battery chargers for cordless drills

Pole sanders

Sanding sheets

Putty knives

Drywall carriers
